GOOD UMPIRES ARE GOOD FIT RUNNERS.

Basic skills in umpiring stem from a love of and a dedication to running.

In a game setting , several types of running are expected…let’s take a quick look.

GAME FLOW RUNNING: As you make position you are constantly on the move. Reading play, working angles, cutting-in and hopefully never “stopping and propping.” In 2 &3 umpire games you run to anticipate play, boundaries (2 aside) keep distance apart constant. Circling packs, moving forgood “sight.”You are running all the time.

SPRINTING: Dynamic acceleration (quick steps and fast movement) is essential in decision making responses, quick adjustments to keep up with play and ensure you are in the right position to decide. (Quick sprints are most effective over 5-10 metres)

TRIGGERING: Similar to sprinting in game flow, triggering ensures we respond to aspects like throw ins, getting into packs for a ball up, 1st/2nd leg hand overs, kicking-on from centre returns, getting under flight of the ball in the goals, boundary assist etc. Triggering gives you presence and power in your game.

BACKWARDS RUNNING: This is an umpires master skill. Whether it’s scouting packs, getting out of the way for oncoming play, getting to the post for a set kick it looks and helps dramatically to your ability to position ….and looks fantastic.

Newer umpires struggle with this. Like all skills its takes lots and lots of practise…don’t avoid it…embrace it.

RUNNING ON EMPTY: At this time of year you will experience at least one “tired quarter” where the tank seems to run out….Second quarters and third quarters in games. However, we do recover and you will see you get a second wind. Important to recognise, important to hydrate each quarter, important to “push on”

Our Consolidation Phase (Rounds 7-12) can see you really making progress with your training and running commitment. Give it a priority.

Our top umpires are disciplined, committed and always focused on their running….. let’s join the club in the coming weeks.

FIELD UMPIRES NOTES

25/5/26 -

TRENDS:

1. DRAGGING IN THE BALL> Split second timing and alertness to players when gaining possession drop/pull in and make no attempt when tackled to dispose of the ball. They form the packs, early detection in the game will stop it.

2. MARKING CONTEST INFRINGEMENTS- Again be alert to all contenders…look for holding, chopping, scragging etc.

3. PACK POSITIONING>Circle congested and chaotic play like a pendulum clock look for the sight of the ball better and tacklers…do not stop and prop or run in too close.

4. AWARDING FREE KICKS Point the free kick direction not the player

5. COMMUNICATION IS….

a. WHISTLE strong, long, loud IT is the game “stopper” Players play on until the whistle blows. ( we don’t need endless play on calls)

b. SIGNAL The all-important visual cue to to all concerned what the free kick is for…ie why you blew the stoppage

c. COMMUNICATE..Use your voice to inform, instruct respectfully and with authority and conviction.

d. Work the ANGLE you need to move to from off the mark.

GOAL UMPIRES NOTES

25/5/26

GOALIES: NEW COACH.. NEW TWEAKS…. Poolside meeting 6.10pm Monday (by the pool table)

TRENDS:

1. Avoid rushed signals and OTT fast waves ( smooth and controlled)

2. Beware of unpredictable ball when you are getting MAYHEM near the line…get out of the way (straddle)

3. Set kick for goal…focus on watching ball hitting the boot – it will help identify trajectories.

4. Be more self aware of rushed flag waves (esp point wave)that cross your line of vision…ever upfield
